Three different structures (tres estructuras diferentes)

These three expressions look similar but have completely different meanings. This is one of the most confusing topics for English learners.

Used to + infinitive (review)

We learned this in Book 3. It describes past habits that are no longer true:

🔹 Esto lo aprendimos en el Libro 3. Describe hábitos pasados que ya no son ciertos:

I used to live in Madrid. (Antes vivía en Madrid). => I don't live there anymore.

She used to smoke. (Ella antes fumaba). => She doesn't smoke anymore.

Be used to + noun / gerund (estar acostumbrado a)

Be used to means to be accustomed to something. It describes something that feels normal to you because you have been doing it for a while:

🔹 Be used to significa estar acostumbrado a algo. Describe algo que te resulta normal porque llevas un tiempo haciéndolo:

I am used to waking up early. (Estoy acostumbrado a despertarme temprano).

She is used to the cold weather. (Ella está acostumbrada al frío).

They are used to working long hours. (Están acostumbrados a trabajar muchas horas).

After be used to, we use a noun or a gerund (verb + -ing), never an infinitive. I am used to waking up early. Not: I am used to wake up early.

🔹 Después de be used to, usamos un sustantivo o un gerundio (verbo + -ing), nunca un infinitivo. I am used to waking up early. No: I am used to wake up early.

Get used to + noun / gerund (acostumbrarse a)

Get used to means to become accustomed to something. It describes the process of adapting to something new:

🔹 Get used to significa acostumbrarse a algo. Describe el proceso de adaptación a algo nuevo:

I'm getting used to my new job. (Me estoy acostumbrando a mi nuevo trabajo).

She can't get used to the traffic. (Ella no puede acostumbrarse al tráfico).

He got used to living alone after a few months. (Se acostumbró a vivir solo después de unos meses).

Comparison (comparación)

I used to drive to work. (Antes iba en coche al trabajo). => past habit, no longer true

I am used to driving to work. (Estoy acostumbrado a ir en coche al trabajo). => it feels normal now

I'm getting used to driving to work. (Me estoy acostumbrando a ir en coche al trabajo). => still adapting
