Wish and if only (wish e if only)

Wish for the present (wish para el presente)

We use wish + past simple to talk about things we want to be different in the present but that are not true. It is like a present imaginary situation.

🔹 Usamos wish + past simple para hablar de cosas que queremos que sean diferentes en el presente pero que no son ciertas. Es como una situación imaginaria presente.

I wish I had more time. (Ojalá tuviera más tiempo). => But I don't have more time.

She wishes she lived near the beach. (Ella desearía vivir cerca de la playa). => But she doesn't.

I wish I spoke French. (Ojalá hablara francés). => But I don't speak French.

Like in the second conditional, we use were instead of was in formal English: I wish I were taller. (Ojalá fuera más alto).

🔹 Como en el segundo condicional, usamos were en lugar de was en inglés formal: I wish I were taller. (Ojalá fuera más alto).

Wish for the past (wish para el pasado)

We use wish + past perfect to express regret about the past - things that happened (or didn't happen) that we want to change.

🔹 Usamos wish + past perfect para expresar arrepentimiento sobre el pasado - cosas que ocurrieron (o no ocurrieron) y que queremos cambiar.

I wish I had studied harder. (Ojalá hubiera estudiado más).

She wishes she hadn't said that. (Ella desearía no haber dicho eso).

I wish I had traveled more when I was young. (Ojalá hubiera viajado más de joven).

Wish + would (complaints and desires for change)

We use wish + would to complain about situations we want to change, or about other people's behavior.

🔹 Usamos wish + would para quejarnos de situaciones que queremos que cambien, o sobre el comportamiento de otras personas.

I wish it would stop raining. (Ojalá dejara de llover).

I wish you would listen to me. (Ojalá me escucharas).

She wishes he would call her more often. (Ella desearía que él la llamara más).

We don't normally use wish + would about ourselves. We don't say I wish I would... We say I wish I could...

🔹 Normalmente no usamos wish + would sobre nosotros mismos. No decimos I wish I would... Decimos I wish I could...

If only (si tan solo)

If only is a stronger version of wish. It works exactly the same way:

🔹 If only es una versión más fuerte de wish. Funciona exactamente igual:

If only I had more time! (¡Si tan solo tuviera más tiempo!)

If only I had studied harder! (¡Si tan solo hubiera estudiado más!)

If only it would stop raining! (¡Si tan solo dejara de llover!)

Summary (resumen)

wish + past simple => present wish (I wish I had a car.)

wish + past perfect => past regret (I wish I had bought that car.)

wish + would => complaint/desire for change (I wish it would rain.)

if only => stronger version of wish

Repetición espaciada

Estudiar todo de golpe sirve para el examen de mañana, pero no para memorizar conceptos a largo plazo. Espaciar las sesiones de estudio dejando horas e incluso días de por medio es mucho más eficaz.
