My Neighbor Margaret

My neighbor Margaret is 83 years old. She lives alone[1] in a small house next to mine, with her cat Beethoven. She is a quiet woman, and if you see her in her garden[2] in the morning, drinking tea and reading the newspaper, you would never guess[3] the life she has lived.

Margaret has been to 54 countries. She has climbed[4] Mount Kilimanjaro. She has crossed[5] the Sahara Desert on a camel.[6] She has sailed[7] across the Atlantic Ocean in a small boat. She has eaten insects[8] in Thailand, and she has slept under the stars in the middle of the Amazon.

She has also done many things outside of traveling. She has written two books about her adventures.[9] She has learned to speak four languages: English, French, Arabic, and Swahili. She has run twelve marathons. She has even[10] jumped out of an airplane — three times.

I asked her once,[11] "Margaret, what is the best thing you have ever done?"

She thought for a moment and said, "I have done many incredible[12] things in my life. But the best thing I have ever done is learn to say yes. When I was young, I was very shy.[13] I was afraid[14] of everything. One day, a friend invited me to go camping[15] in the mountains. I almost[16] said no, but something inside me said yes. That trip changed my life. After that, I have said yes to everything."

Now, every morning, I see Margaret in her garden, drinking her tea. Beethoven sleeps at her feet.[17] She looks like a normal old woman. But she is the most extraordinary person I have ever met.
